8 Top Tips For Running A Successful + Sustainable Business.

I have been running my business She Almighty for 8 years now through which I offer life, career and business coaching for aspirational women. During that time I have coached countless women to start and take their businesses to the next level and have worked with female entrepreneurs and leaders in their space to be more purposeful, more impactful and to be their best selves so that they thrive in their businesses and in their lives.

Through this coaching and my personal experience, I have learnt a thing or two about how to grow and run a successful and sustainable business. Through this blog, I will impart successful business tips to help you start and grow your business in the most effective, meaningful and enjoyable way, with sustainable business strategy that will enable you to thrive long-term in your business and in your life.

Here are my 8 top tips for running a successful and sustainable business:

  1. Create the business you really want now

Create the business you really want to create now even if that requires you to pivot or make space in what you are currently doing - if you don’t, nothing will change and you’ll stay on the path you don’t actually want to be on. And create that business even if all the steps aren’t obvious or immediately available to you. Spoiler alert, they usually aren’t! Connect with your vision and begin with the end goal in mind, start with that you do know and need to figure out and build in alignment from there. Anything else is a distraction and ultimately, a waste of your time, or, potentially exciting progress towards your actual dreams and aspirations.

2. Connect with your business ‘why’

Connect with what building or running this business gives you. How it supports you financially, in your purpose, fulfilment, in creating the lifestyle, freedom, flexibility you want. That is your why and will keep you motivated long-term and that is essential because believe me, motivation waxes and wanes like the moon! Motivation isn’t a given and it isn’t constant or consistent unless you can continue to connect with why you do what you do, your intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. When you are able to do that, you will understand and enjoy more of you what you do and that brings both business sustainability and enjoyment!

3. Be clear about the value exchange and desired outcome for your customers

Be clear about what the value exchange is between your product or service and your clients or customers, because they are buying the outcome and people are happy to pay money for what they perceive to be of value to them. More than the nature of the product or service you provide, your customers need to believe you, your products or services can help them get what they really want or solve a problem they have. When you are able to help them understand what they really want, why they want it and how your product or service will deliver on that desire or outcome, that is when they will invest and how you will be most impactful, rewarded and fulfilled.

4. Have the business model and metrics for success

Your business model is essentially what people can buy from you, how much it costs and how many of those you need them to purchase or subscribe to each month to have a viable and successful business at any given time based on your goals and expenses. An effective business model will offer accessible and desirable products and services for your customers and clients that they need and want. When you have defined your metrics of success based on your business goals and objectives, your business activity and results should reflect that giving you both a successful and sustainable business.

5. Play to your strengths, outsource where you can

Where you can, play to your strengths and get help or outsource in areas that you don’t enjoy so you can focus on and excel in what you do. Most people aren’t good at everything in their business, they don’t enjoy doing it either and they certainly don’t have the capacity. That doesn’t stop many of us trying though! And of course, it tends to be more difficult in the beginning when you are building the funds to invest back into the business. But when you can, no matter how big or small, invest in that tool, person or service that can help you. You and your business will be more successful and sustainable as a result and I promise, you will thank me for that tip!

6. Figure out the marketing strategy that works for you

There are so many ways to market your business but that doesn’t mean that you are willing or prepared to do all of them. The key to a sustainable marketing strategy is figuring out the most enjoyable and effective ways to market your business to the audience that really needs and wants what you have to offer; and to show up wholeheartedly and commit to those channels. Don’t get distracted by the rest, the things that others are doing and you feel you should be doing. It won’t be helpful. And remember, even when business is good, don’t neglect your marketing and business development! Because not working on your business, as well as in it, will catch up with you and that will not ensure a successful or sustainable business.

7. Prioritise and align your time, energy and actions with your vision

Stay true to your vision, regularly reflect on your plan - where, how, when, why and build your business offerings and activity accordingly. Remember, where your attention and intention goes, your energy flows - whether your business is a side-hustle or full-time gig! Running a business is often overwhelming and challenging because whilst we love the fact that everything is on our terms… that is also what makes it so blummin hard! When you have clarity, you can show up with focus, conviction, confidence and purpose! And not only does that feel great - which is incredibly important. It will also ensure your business is both successful in the everyday especially if you are the one driving it; and set up for sustainable success into the future.

8. Look after yourself!

Last but definitely not least! In order to run and drive a sustainable business and to thrive in your business and life, self-care is absolutely key. Identify what supports your best self, curate your ideal week and build in time and practises for what you need and enjoy. Identify and work with your quieter and busier business times in the week, months and year allowing for better energy management and work-life harmony. At any given point, provide the opportunity to connect with how you are feeling in yourself and in your business because that is what will ensure your success and sustainability, your happiness and fulfilment and therefore, the success and sustainability of your business.

Final word: Recognise that you are always growing and evolving and so will your business! Your intentions now, your products and services might be very different in a years time and that is all part of the fun because you are in charge, you are in control and you are steering the ship which you can redirect at any time. Be prepared to adapt, ride the rollercoaster and keep following what lights you up. Afterall, life is far too short not to love and gain purpose and fulfilment through what you do,
